In
2005, after completing 47 years of activity in Sri Lanka,
Lions are probably the largest, most active best organised
service organisation.
The Multiple District which now comprises of 3 sub Districts
will be further subdivided into 6 sub Districts A1, A2, B1,
B2, C1, C2 effective 1st July 2005. The membership now exceeds
9000 in over 300 clubs in almost every important location
in the country.
The Multiple Council plays a very important role in co-ordinating
the activities of all Sub-Districts. 2004/2005 has been an
exceptional year under the dynamic leadership of the first
lady Chairperson Marcella Silva. The first ISAAME Women's
Forum organised by Lions International was held under her
leadership in December 2004.
The Multiple District Leadership Institute has been activated
and held 3 successful workshops on the MERL Programme, programme
for Emerging Leaders and Vision 2008. The last one resulted
in the Vision & Strategic Plan being formulated subject
to endorsement by the Past Governors and Lions of MD 306.
The Tsunami disaster and the destruction that followed made
the Multiple Council focus on building around 3,000 houses
and 10 community centres for the displaced populace. LCIF
has responded magnificently to our application and endorsed
a possible contribution of USD 3 Mn. A committee chaired by
PID Chuck Wijenathen with ID Asoka Gunasekera and PID Mahendra
Amarasuriya as Co-Chairs and the Council of Governors is already
drawing up plans for its implementation.
This newly created website of the Multiple will be an ideal
communication tool giving information to both local and international
Lions regarding the activities of MD 306. It will also enable
the Multiple to communicate with all the generous donors mainly,
Lions Clubs and Districts all over the world who donated directly
and through LCIF
to help rebuild the coastal areas of our beautiful country.
International President Mahendra Amarasuriya
