About us
Since 1917, Lions clubs have offered people the opportunity to give something back to their communities. From involving members in projects as local as cleaning up an area park or as far-reaching as bringing sight to the world's blind, Lions clubs have always embraced those committed to building a brighter future for their community.

Today with more than 46,000 clubs in 193 countries and geographical areas, Lions have expanded their focus to help meet the ever-increasing needs of our global community.

Our programs are continually changing to meet new needs and greater demands, but our mission has never wavered: "We Serve."

BRIEF HISTORY OF LIONISM IN SRI LANKA

In 1958, the philosophy of Melvin Jones was brought to Sri Lanka and the first Lions Club in Sri Lanka, the 'Lions Club of Colombo' was established Iys in 1958 as a constituent of District 304 South India. It is learnt that late Colonel Lion C.P.Jayawardena was the Charter President of this first club in Sri Lanka, and as per the information available, the Charter Secretary was Lion Onali Ghulam Hussein.

Probationary District under District 304 - South India

Among the gentlemen instrumental in setting up the first club were, Noshir Rustomjee, Onali Ghulam Hussein, Col. C.P.Jayawardena, Zain Markar from Sri Lanka and Noshir Pundol from District 304 South India. / Though the clubs in Sri Lanka grew in number during the 60s with S Colombo Host, Colombo West, Colombo South, Colombo North, Colombo East, Kandy, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Mirigama, Negombo, Galle, Wattala etc., being extended in the 60s, followed by Matara, Badulla/Bandarawela, Jaffna & Trincomalee, Sri Lanka was able to achieve the status of probationary District 306 under the supervision of District 304 South India, only in 1966. Late Lion K.Satchithanandan, a Chartered Accountant by profession, was elected the first District Governor of District 306 Sri Lanka.

Single District Status in 1972

The services rendered by the Past Leaders PDG Lion K.Satchithanandan, / PDG Lion Felix Perera, PDG Lion Zain Marker, PDG Lion Shelton Cabraal, PDG Lion Vernon Fernando, PDG Lion Stanley Jayawardena and other Lion Leaders who were instrumental in achieving the Independent Single District status in 1972 during the Governorship of PDG Lion Cecil de S.Wijeratne is praiseworthy. The co-operation and assistance rendered by Lion Minoo Engineer of India, the International Secretary for India and South East Asia (Father of the incumbent Secretary Lion Vispy Minoo Engineer) in Sri Lanka achieving the Single District status will be remembered forever.

Re-Districting in 1978 & 1988

Lionism in Sri Lanka started spreading gradually, mainly in the Colombo Metropolis its suburbs and major provincial towns. By 1974, Sri Lankan Lionism had shown a rapid growth in numbers, by clubs and by membership, it was time opportune for re-districting. Accordingly, in, 1978, the Multiple District 306 was born with two Sub-Districts 306 A 85 B. By 1988, the Multiple District 306 Sri Lanka had further expanded and it comprised of adequate number of clubs and members for further Sub-division. In 1988, the MD 306 was once again re-districted to form Sub-districts 306 A, 306 B and 306 C.

Commitment & Contribution to humanitarian service

Though the records have not been maintained over the years, the contribution by Lions in Sri Lanka towards the National Development, poverty alleviation, housing & shelter, community health, sight conservation and prevention of blindness, environment protection, youth related activities, education & career guidance, drug awareness & rehabilitation etc., was tremendous.

'Chandra Wettasinghe Memorial Hall', Kotte & 'Lions Youth Secretariat', Vidya Mawatha

Lions Youth* Secretariat at Vidya Mawatha, Chandra Wettasinghe Memorial Hall - Lions Activity Centre, Kotte, are two edifices which speaks volumes of the great contributions by Leaders of yester year. The donation of land by Late Lion Buddy Wettasinghe to build the Lions activity Centre, Kotte, was honoured by naming it after his dear wife Late Chandra Wettasinghe. Many Eye Care Units, Vocational Training Centers, Homes for the Elders built and maintained by Lions with LCIF assistance in many parts of the country speaks volumes of our concern about the humanitarian needs and our contribution towards the community well being.
